Imagine if you always knew the exact words to say to get people to buy products through your affiliate link. You’d quickly increase your affiliate sales, right?
Today we are going to be talking about the science and the art of persuasive marketing, so you know exactly what you need to say to sell more products with less effort.
Sure, you can get all the traffic in the world and have the best product in the world or the biggest email list, but that doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to persuade people to buy the products.
If you really want to get more sales there’s only one thing that you need.
That one thing is trust.
Table of Contents:
Increase Customer Trust
When people trust you they will listen to you and they will follow your advice. Ultimately they will buy the products that you recommend.
Without trust it’s almost impossible to try and sell anything. That’s why so many online businesses fail. Have you ever made the mistake of trying to sell to cold traffic? If you have you’ll know what I mean.
So, we know that we need trust, but how do we build it?
Well let me tell you an embarrassing story of how I got banned from an internet forum. I am still banned today and I won’t lie, I deserved it.
I was a newbie and I had read an ebook about affiliate marketing. It recommended using forums as a way to drive traffic and make sales. At the time that made sense to me.
So what did I do?
I immediately started posting affiliate links in forums. Every opportunity I saw I used to get more sales.
I didn’t see the people, I just saw the dollar signs. I started sending private messages too. I did everything I could to get more traffic and try and make a sale.
Nothing good happened from that. I didn’t make any sales and of course I was banned rightly so. Even now those types of ebooks haven’t changed all that much.
Everyday I see newbies doing the exact same thing, but on social media.
What usually happens to them is that they get banned from Facebook groups or they get blocked and ignored. Eventually their account gets flagged and that gets banned too.
Those books never tell you that. So what’s going on here and why aren’t you getting the sales you deserve? Most importantly what can you do to fix it?
First, stop posting affiliate links everywhere. All you are doing is irritating people. I am not in any position to criticize anyone.
I respect your hustle, but I do want to make sure that your hustle leads you to success. If you are perceived as annoying then all you’re really doing is repelling and pushing away the people that you need to attract.
That is the exact opposite of what you need to do. When you attract people what happens then? People will want to hear what you have to say.
That is the first step in building trust.
Make Customers Listen
So to get someone to listen to you only really need to talk about two things; their pleasure and their pain.
Everybody is moving away from something and hopefully moving towards something better. To put it another way, they want to decrease the pain and increase the pleasure.
I’ll give you an example then I’ll explain some of the most common pleasures and pains so you can use them in your marketing. These pleasures and pains will work for any product in any niche.
A couple of weeks ago I decided to buy my son a new phone. He hadn’t had an upgrade in a while and his birthday was coming up so I figured that it might be the right time to give him a new one. However I wasn’t too sure.
His current phone still worked, but he did complain about it a lot. I went to the store, spoke to a salesman and told him which phone my son currently had.
Then the salesman started reeling off a list of problems that happened to be the exact same problems that my son complained about. I immediately knew that this guy understood the problem. He knew what I was talking about and knew my pain points.
So I listened because he had my attention and eventually I trusted his advice.
On the other hand, if I walked in there and he started to sell to me immediately without understanding my problem, without taking the time to see what the best fit was for me I would have just walked out. It is the same process online.
You need to acknowledge the problem first before you try and sell anything. That’s really only half of the story. You still need to motivate people to buy.
You need to tap into their existing desire.
Tap Into Customer Desire
You do not need to create desire though because people already have that.
The only thing you need to do is tap into it because they already want a solution. What you need to do is show them why your option is the best one for them. Thankfully that is pretty easy to do, but it takes more than making a list of benefits. You have to deliver pleasure.
I’ll give you three of the biggest pleasures that already exist. This is going to make selling pretty much anything fairly easy.
So weave these into your content.
- Authority
- Social proof
- Social recognition
The first one is authority, the second one is social proof, and the third one is social recognition.
You need to get the idea that your product could be recommended by authority figures, that it’s very popular amongst customers, and it helps people to achieve great things which in turn allows them to get more recognition and validation from their peers.
If you can weave that into your content you will immediately have their attention. You can build trust with that, but it’s only one side of the coin.
Now that you know the three most common pleasures, you need to know some pain points. The biggest fear out there is probably FOMO.
Use FOMO
That’s fear of missing out and that can be used in a couple of different ways. First of all you need to paint a picture of what the customer is missing out on.
Show them what life will be like if they don’t buy the product. You need to balance so you have this pleasure that they gain and then what they miss out on or how things could potentially get worse if they don’t take action.
You have to make it really clear what’s at stake.
Once they know what’s at stake then they’ll be more motivated to buy from you, but next you need a finishing blow to get that sale fast.
We can use FOMO again, but in a slightly different way. This time you’re going to inject a little bit of scarcity.
You say that there’s limited stock or a time sensitive deal.
You could even say there’s a special bonus going away soon. When you use these kinds of scarcity tactics you’re giving people a reason to buy right now.
Most of those countdown timers that you see on websites are fake, but if you use a fake one that tactic only works once because then people will know you used fake scarcity and you’ve broken their trust. That’s why all my countdown timers are real and that’s why I encourage you to use real ones as well.
Remember to build people’s trust and tap into their pleasures/desires. This will persuade your customers to buy your products and you will make the sales that you want.
And now you’ll know exactly how to increase your affiliate sales, quickly.
